Dr. Jennifer Petrie, MD
Jennifer Petrie, MD, is a fourth-generation Idahoan with deep roots in the communities she serves. She
grew up in Lewiston before her family moved to Emmett during her senior year of high school, which is
when her calling to study biology and pursue medicine truly took shape. After graduating from Northwest
Nazarene College in 1994, she attended the University of Washington School of Medicine through the
WWAMI program, earning her medical degree in 1998. She completed her residency at the Family
Medicine Residency of Idaho in 2001, followed by an obstetrics fellowship in Spokane, Washington.
Over the years, she has practiced in a variety of settings, including private practice in St. Maries, Idaho,
and as an attending physician in the University of Minnesota system while her husband, Ryan, completed
anesthesia training. They eventually returned to Idaho with young twins and another baby on the way, and
Dr. Petrie rejoined FMRI before moving back to Emmett in 2011 to practice full-spectrum family
medicine, including inpatient care, emergency medicine, obstetrics, and surgical obstetrics. In 2015, she
and Ryan opened Emmett Family Medicine & DPC, where they have been honored to care for their
hometown community.
Several years ago, Dr. Petrie felt a renewed pull toward the foundations of physiology and what she
fondly calls “med school 2.0.” A voracious reader and lifelong learner, she began to notice clear, yet often
underutilized, principles of health that extended beyond conventional approaches. Her early focus on
nutrition, vitamin D3, and movement expanded into deeper study of the autonomic nervous system, the
endocrine system, and the role of the subconscious mind in health. Today, she integrates advanced
therapies such as electromagnetic treatments, ozone, and personalized education and counseling to help
patients understand and support their own physiology. With Gem State Integrative Medicine in Meridian,
she is expanding these services to the broader Treasure Valley so more people can access thoughtful,
integrative care and practical tools for robust health.
Dr. Petrie is continually inspired by the remarkable design of the human body and its capacity for balance
and resilience. Reflecting on the deep connection between mind, body, spirit, and the influence of the
Divine on physiology, she has developed a framework she calls “Theophysiology.” This perspective
recognizes that practices such as forgiveness, presence, and genuine love for self and others can have
measurable effects on health and well-being. When the conscious and subconscious minds align and the
autonomic nervous system receives the message that we are safe, the body has greater capacity to return
to harmony and healing. “Mind your mind” is one of her guiding phrases, highlighting the importance of
tending to our thoughts as a powerful part of any care plan.
At GemSIM, this philosophy informs a very practical approach to care. Rather than viewing the body as
simply solid matter, Dr. Petrie appreciates the body as a dynamic system of water, electrons, and energy,
wonderfully made with built-in capacity to respond and heal. The goal of care is to help patients “flip the
switch” from sympathetic-dominant fight, flight, or freeze into parasympathetic-dominant rest, digest, and
repair, using both evidence-based medicine and the “good gifts” of the Creator. Dr. Petrie often refers to
this as offering “permission to heal,” inviting patients to engage with information, therapies, and
technologies that support their highest quality of life in service to others.
